Largest Whale Sharks Cannot be Found

Researchers cannot find the largest of the world’s largest fish. According to a new study published this week in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the biggest whale sharks observed in the past few years are significantly smaller than those observed and recorded over a decade ago.

Researchers from the University of Western Australia and the AustralianInstitute of Marine Science compared visual estimates of whale shark sizes with data from underwater stereo-video systems at Australia’s Ningaloo Reef. By using linear mixed-effects models, researchers found that visual estimates were often inaccurate and biased toward underestimation, especially as the actual size of the whale shark increased.
