Death of toddler who choked on grape at Pizza Hut ‘tragic accident’

The death of a two-year-old boy who choked on a grape at Pizza Hut was called a ‘tragic accident’ by a coroner today.

Those in attendance at the inquest at Newcastle’s Civic Centre heard from Jacob Jenkins’ father, David, that that after ordering their food at the Pizza Hut in Hartlepool last October they went to the salad bar and got the toddler a bowl of apple and grapes. When Jacob finished them he started on a second bowl of grapes and began to choke.

Jacob’s parents David and Abigail, and other customers and staff at the restaurant failed to dislodge the grape, and the toddler was rushed to Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle, where he died.

‘Jacob’s father passed him to her [Abigail],’ read a statement from Pizza Hut manager Emily Vaughan.

‘He was pale, he was blue, his eyes were shut, his mother was crying.’
