A synthetic opiate is causing a wave of overdose deaths in America – produced in illicit labs in China and Mexico and often sold in place of heroin.
The illicitly manufactured painkiller Fentanyl is between 20 and 100 times stronger than heroin, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The drug – prescribed to cancer patients for severe pain – is extremely powerful in low doses, and kills even experienced opiate abusers.
Several American states have reported a surge in deaths caused by fentanyl, with more fentanyl overdoses than heroin in some places.
